The short answer

Pick glass with a low solar heat gain coefficient, multiple Low-E coatings and an insulated frame. On west walls, a triple-pane, low-SHGC window is the single biggest comfort upgrade you can make.

Why the west wall is different

Morning sun hits the east side when the air is still cool. West-facing glass gets the sun at its lowest, most direct angle during the hottest hours of the day — in July, often above 110°F outside. Overhangs barely help at that angle, so the glass itself has to do the work.

That's why west bedrooms and living rooms stay hot well into the evening, and why your AC runs hardest between 3 and 8 p.m.

What to look for on the label

Low SHGC

Solar heat gain coefficient measures how much sun heat passes through. Lower is better in the desert.

Low U-factor

Measures conducted heat. Matters on extreme days when outside air is far hotter than inside.

Multiple Low-E coatings

Coatings on more than one glass surface reflect more infrared heat while keeping views clear.

Insulated frame

Old aluminum frames conduct heat straight in. Insulated vinyl or composite frames stop that path.

What to skip

  • Dark film or mirror tint as a substitute for proper glass — it dims the room more than it cools it
  • Single Low-E coat packages sold as 'energy efficient' with a high SHGC
  • Aluminum frames without a thermal break
  • Replacing the glass only, when the frame and seals have also failed

Frequently asked questions

What is the best window for a west-facing room in Las Vegas?+

A window with a low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), ideally around 0.20-0.25 or lower, multiple Low-E coatings, and an insulated vinyl or composite frame. Triple-pane units with two argon chambers perform best on hot west walls.

Is SHGC or U-factor more important in the desert?+

For west and south walls in Las Vegas, SHGC matters most because the main load is direct sun. U-factor still matters for conducted heat on 110°+ days, so look for both to be low.

Will tinted glass work instead?+

Dark tints reduce visible light far more than heat and can be restricted by HOAs. Modern spectrally selective Low-E coatings block much more heat while keeping the glass clear.

Should I replace only the west-facing windows?+

It is a common and sensible first phase. West and south openings typically deliver the biggest comfort and bill change per window, and the rest of the house can follow later.

What about a west-facing sliding glass door?+

Sliders are the largest glass area most homes have, so a west-facing slider is often the hottest spot in the house. The same low-SHGC glass package applies.
